Endless runner games are a dime a dozen, but Bendy's Nightmare Run is one of the few that actually tries to do something different with the formula. I picked it up because I enjoyed the creepy cartoon aesthetic of the Bendy universe, and I was curious how that would translate into a fast-paced mobile runner. The game is developed by Joey Drew Studios, and it drops you right into the ink-filled world of Bendy and the Ink Machine, but in a much more arcade-friendly way. You play as Bendy or other unlockable characters, sprinting through a black-and-white cartoon landscape while dodging obstacles and fighting off bosses. It is available on mobile, and you can grab it from Google Play or the App Store depending on your device. If you are into runner games that have a bit of personality and a weird, rubber-hose animation style, this one catches your eye quickly. The controls are simple enough that you can start playing within seconds, but the atmosphere is what really sticks with you at first. It does not feel like a cheap cash-grab tie-in; there is actual care in the visuals and sound.

The core loop is exactly what you would expect from an endless runner: you run forward automatically, swipe left or right to change lanes, swipe up to jump, and swipe down to slide. What makes it feel less generic is the combat twist. You throw projectiles at enemies and bosses while you run, which adds a timing layer that most runners do not have. Early on, it feels pretty forgiving, but the speed ramps up and the screen gets crowded fast. I spent a good amount of time just getting used to the boss patterns, especially the giant cartoon monsters that take multiple hits. You also collect bacon soup cans as currency to unlock new characters and upgrades, which gives you a reason to keep running beyond just beating your high score. The progression is slow but steady, and I liked that each character has slightly different stats, so switching them up feels meaningful. The one thing that took me a while to get used to was the hitbox on some jumps; sometimes it feels like you barely graze an obstacle and still get clipped. Still, once you get into a rhythm, the running and shooting combo is genuinely satisfying.

Compared to other endless runners like Subway Surfers or Temple Run, Bendy's Nightmare Run leans much harder into its theme and boss fights. Subway Surfers is smoother and more about pure evasion, while this game asks you to multitask by aiming and shooting while dodging. That makes it feel a bit more chaotic, and honestly, a bit harder to master. If you want a runner that is simply relaxing to play, this might not be the best fit because the boss encounters can get stressful. But if you are a fan of the Bendy series or you want a runner with more character and a darker cartoon vibe, this one stands out. The art style is not just a skin; it affects the whole mood and makes the game feel like a tiny extension of the Ink Machine world. It is not as polished as the biggest runners out there, but it has a specific charm that fans of the franchise will appreciate. I would say give it a shot if you are tired of the same bright, cheerful runners and want something with a little more grit and personality.

features

  • Run and gun gameplay 🎯 The auto-run is standard, but being able to throw projectiles at enemies and bosses while moving adds a layer of active decision-making that most runners skip.
  • Character variety 🎮 You can unlock multiple characters, and they are not just skins. Each one has different speed, jump, or attack stats, which changes how you approach a run and gives you a reason to grind for soup cans.
  • Boss encounters 👹 Instead of just dodging forever, you face giant cartoon bosses with clear attack patterns. It feels more like a mini-boss rush than a pure distance run, which keeps the sessions from getting stale.
  • Cartoon aesthetic 🎨 The black-and-white rubber-hose animation style is the main draw here. It looks like a 1930s cartoon gone wrong, and that visual identity carries the whole experience.

pros

  • The boss fights break up the monotony of endless running and give you something to actually look forward to.
  • The art and sound design nail the creepy cartoon vibe, so even when you fail, it is fun to watch.
  • Controls are easy to learn, and the swipe detection feels responsive on most phones.
  • Unlockable characters add a bit of replay value without forcing you to pay immediately.

cons

  • The difficulty spike can feel unfair when bosses overlap with tight obstacle sections, and the hitboxes are not always forgiving.
  • Progression is slow if you do not want to watch ads or spend money, and the soup can grind gets repetitive.
  • Some devices may see frame drops during boss fights, which hurts a game that relies on quick reactions.
  • Content is limited compared to bigger runners, so once you unlock everything, there is not much left to chase.
