Angel Or Devil is a visual novel dating sim with light RPG elements that landed on Android and iOS recently, and honestly, it's a solid entry for anyone who enjoys romance stories with a bit of supernatural drama. When I first downloaded it from Google Play, I was expecting just another cheesy anime dating game, but after spending a few evenings playing through the early chapters, I get why people are talking about it. The setup is simple: you play as an ordinary student who accidentally gets involved with both an angel and a devil, and your choices determine which path your relationships take. The app is free to install with optional in-game purchases for extra story chapters and cosmetic items, and there are some ads between scenes, but they're not too annoying. The art style is clean and colorful, which is important for this genre because you're staring at character portraits a lot.
The core gameplay loop is pretty straightforward but has enough depth to keep you invested. Most of your time is spent reading dialogue and making choices that affect your relationship meters with the two main heroines, Celeste the angel and Lilith the devil. What surprised me is the morality system that tracks your angelic and devilish tendencies, which actually opens up different dialogue options and story branches. The writing is decent, with some genuinely funny moments and a few emotional beats that caught me off guard. There are also some mini-games and stat-building activities between story chapters, like studying to raise your intelligence or working out to boost your charm, and these influence which romance routes become available. The controls are simple tap interactions, perfectly suited for playing on a phone during a commute. What I enjoyed most is how your choices feel meaningful rather than just cosmetic, because certain decisions lock you out of other paths, giving the game real replay value for someone like me who likes to see all the endings.
Compared to other mobile visual novels like Mystic Messenger or Love and Producer, Angel Or Devil feels more focused and less overwhelming. Mystic Messenger requires you to check in at specific real-world times, which I found exhausting after a while, but this game lets you progress at your own pace without time-gated phone calls. Love and Producer has more complex card collection mechanics that feel like a grind, while Angel Or Devil keeps its monetization lighter, mostly just asking you to pay if you want extra story content rather than forcing you to spend to enjoy the main route. The anime art style is consistent and appealing, though it doesn't reach the polish level of paid PC visual novels like Katawa Shoujo or Steins;Gate. For a free mobile game though, the character expressions, background art, and soundtrack are above average. Players who enjoyed the relationship building in games like The Arcana or Choices: Stories You Play will probably find Angel Or Devil scratches a similar itch, especially if they prefer a supernatural twist over pure slice-of-life romance.
features
- Choice-driven narrative 🎮 The branching storylines actually matter because your decisions affect which character routes you unlock and what endings you get. I replayed chapter 3 three times just to see how different choices changed the dialogue, and it held my attention each time. The morality system adds replay value that most mobile visual novels lack.
- Stat-building side activities 📊 Between story segments, you can improve your character's attributes like intelligence, charm, and kindness. These stats unlock new dialogue options and romance opportunities, which makes the game feel more interactive than just tapping through text. It reminded me a bit of Persona's social sim elements, but simplified for mobile.
- Anime-style presentation 🎨 The character designs are expressive and the backgrounds are detailed enough to immerse you in the school setting. The soundtrack fits the mood well, with different tracks for angelic and devilish scenes. The UI is clean and easy to navigate, which matters when you're playing on a small screen.
pros
- The writing has genuine charm and some lines actually made me laugh out loud, which is rare for mobile dating sims where the dialogue usually feels generic.
- Your choices feel weighty because the game clearly tracks your morality and relationship points, and later scenes reference your earlier decisions in satisfying ways.
- The art is consistently good across all characters and backgrounds, and the character expressions during emotional scenes are well animated for a mobile game.
- You can play at your own pace without worrying about real-time events or energy systems that force you to wait.
cons
- The story starts slow and the first two chapters are mostly setup, so you need patience before the supernatural romance elements kick in fully.
- There are ads between story chapters, and while they're skippable after a few seconds, they still break the immersion when you're invested in the dialogue.
- Some stat checks feel grindy because you have to repeat the same mini-games multiple times to unlock certain romance options.
- The game only has two main romance routes so far, so if you prefer more variety in love interests, you might feel limited compared to other visual novels with larger casts.
