Garry's Mod is a sandbox game, and honestly, that label undersells how weird and open it really is. I picked it up on PC through Steam, and from the first session it felt less like a normal game and more like a box of tools that players have been tinkering with for years. You spawn into a map with no real objective, and that is exactly the point. If you want to build a rickety car out of props, do it. If you want to pose characters and take screenshots, also fine. It scratches an itch that scripted shooters never touch. The game has been around long enough that its community and mod scene are huge, so there is always something to install or try. I play it on PC, and I have not seen an official Android version on Google Play, so don't expect to download it as an app on your phone. The base game itself is a paid purchase on Steam, and while I won't quote exact prices, the amount of content you get for that one-time buy makes it feel reasonable. Extra in-game purchases are not really the focus here; the real spending, if any, is on other Source engine games for their assets.

The actual play loop depends entirely on what mode or server you join. In sandbox mode I spend most of my time using the spawn menu and physics gun, dragging props around, welding things together, and watching my terrible contraptions fall apart in funny ways. The controls take a little getting used to, especially the tool gun and the various constraint tools, but once you understand the basics, building gets addictive. There are also popular modes like Trouble in Terrorist Town and Prop Hunt, where the rules are much more structured and the tension comes from bluffing or hiding. What I enjoyed most was the freedom to break things and then rebuild them differently. Nothing scolds you for messing around. At the same time, the game does not hold your hand, so new players may feel lost for the first hour or two until they find a server or a workshop addon that clicks.

Compared with something like Minecraft or Roblox, Garry's Mod feels more like a toolkit than a polished game. Minecraft gives you clearer goals and a survival loop, while Roblox wraps its experiences in a cleaner storefront. Garry's Mod is messier, and that is part of its charm, but it also means the quality of what you play depends heavily on the server and the mods installed. Some players will prefer the structure of a dedicated building game or a proper shooter. I still reach for Garry's Mod when I want pure creative chaos or a social server with friends. It is not the prettiest or the most beginner-friendly sandbox out there, but few games let you bend the rules this freely.
