Enshrouded is a survival action RPG with crafting and base building, and it is one of those games that grabs you in the first hour if you like the genre. I picked it up on PC through Steam, and at the time I am writing this it has not appeared on Android or Google Play, so if you are searching for an app on your phone, this is not that kind of game. It is a full desktop experience. When I first spawned in, the world felt moody and dangerous, with a thick fog called the Shroud covering large parts of the map. That fog is not just a visual gimmick; it drains your timer and forces you to plan your routes. The starting area is fairly calm, which gave me time to learn the basics without being punished. Players who enjoy Valheim or similar survival crafting games will feel at home quickly, but the darker fantasy tone and the vertical map design make it feel different from the start.

The core loop is about gathering, crafting, building a base, and pushing into dangerous areas to unlock more of the map. Controls are standard for PC: WASD to move, mouse to look and attack, and hotkeys for quick items. Combat is action-based with blocking, dodging, and a stamina bar, so spamming attacks will get you killed. I liked that the skill tree is tied to what you actually do, so using a bow or a staff gradually improves those abilities. Base building is flexible and satisfying, and placing a flame altar lets you reshape the land around it, which is a small but clever touch. The Shroud timer adds tension to exploration, and I found myself planning routes and retreating to safe ground more carefully than in other survival games. Boss fights and enemy camps gave me reasons to prepare gear instead of rushing in.

Compared with Valheim, Enshrouded feels more directed and story-driven, with NPCs to rescue and quests to follow, while Valheim leans more on pure exploration and discovery. I would say Enshrouded is easier to get into for players who want clearer goals, but some survival veterans may miss the loose, self-made adventure style. Compared with something like Grounded, the combat here feels heavier and more deliberate, though the building system is less about creative playgrounds and more about practical shelters. The art style is darker and more detailed, and the world feels more authored. If you want a survival game with a bit more structure and a strong sense of place, this is worth a look on PC.

features

  • Shroud exploration 👉 The fog zones push you to manage time and gear, and every trip inside feels like a small risk-reward decision.
  • Skill progression 👉 Abilities level up through use, so your playstyle naturally shapes the character without forcing you into a rigid class.
  • Base building 👉 The flame altar and terrain editing let you build practical shelters and expand them, though it is less freeform than pure sandbox builders.
  • Quest-driven survival 👉 Rescuing NPCs and following tasks gives the world more direction than many survival games, which helps if you like clear goals.

pros

  • The Shroud system creates real tension and makes exploration feel purposeful.
  • Combat with blocking and stamina keeps fights from turning into button mashing.
  • Building your base and reshaping terrain is simple to learn and rewarding.
  • The darker fantasy world and sound design pull you into the setting.

cons

  • The Shroud timer can feel stressful when you just want to explore freely.
  • Performance on older PCs may struggle in busy areas or during building.
  • Some resource gathering becomes repetitive after long sessions.
  • If you prefer mobile play, this is not an option since there is no Android version or Google Play app.
