I've been using Genie: AI Photo Video Editor from AIGX-Studio for a few months now, and it's honestly become my go-to app for quick edits on my phone. It's an all-in-one multimedia editing tool that combines AI-powered photo enhancement with solid video editing capabilities. The app first launched back in 2023 and is available for free on the Google Play Store, where it has already been downloaded over 10 million times. You don't need to register an account to get started, which is a big plus for me. It's free to download and install, though there are in-app purchases for premium features and a subscription option if you want access to everything. The app also shows some ads, but they're not too intrusive. With a rating of 4.4 stars and a pretty large user base, it seems like a lot of people are finding it useful, especially for social media content creators like me, who need to quickly touch up photos or cut together short clips for Instagram or TikTok.
When you first open the app, it's pretty straightforward. You just choose whether you want to work on a photo or a video, and then you import your file from your gallery. The main edit screen gives you a timeline at the bottom for videos, and a lot of the AI features are right there in a top menu. For photos, I usually start with the "Enhance" button, which instantly adjusts lighting and color. One tip I've picked up is to use the AI "Object Removal" tool before applying a filter, because it cleans up the background nicely. For videos, I like to use the "Auto Subtitles" feature, which generates captions in seconds. A handy trick is to save your custom filter presets so you can apply the same look to a whole batch of photos without redoing all the steps. The app also supports multiple layers and masks, which gives you a lot of control once you get used to it.
Before settling on Genie, I tried a few other similar apps, including Snapseed and CapCut. I liked Snapseed for its precise color grading tools, but it doesn't handle video at all. CapCut is great for video editing, but I found its AI features to be a bit limited compared to what Genie offers. Honestly, what made me stick with Genie is the convenience of having both photo and video editing in one place. I used to have to jump back and forth between two different apps on my phone, which got annoying. Now I just open Genie for everything. I also appreciate that the AI features actually work well without a heavy watermark or forcing me into a subscription right away. The app feels built for real users like me who want decent results without spending hours learning complex software. It's not perfect, but for everyday use, it hits the sweet spot between power and simplicity.
features
- 🚀 AI Background Generator: This is probably the coolest feature for me. You can take a regular picture and just tap a button to replace the entire background with something AI-generated. It's way more advanced than the "remove background" tool you get in something like PicsArt, where you just get a transparent cutout. Here, the app actually understands the scene and creates a whole new realistic backdrop, like putting you on a beach or in a futuristic city. Snapseed doesn't have anything close to this.
- 🚀 Auto Subtitles with Multiple Languages: Unlike CapCut, which gives you basic subtitles, Genie's automatic captioning supports a lot of languages and actually syncs with the audio surprisingly well, even with background noise. I made a video with some ambient music, and it still caught 95% of the words correctly. You can then pick from different animated text styles to make the captions pop.
- 🚀 Advanced Object Removal: While a lot of apps have a healing brush, Genie's version uses AI to fill in the missing space behind the removed object. I tested it on a photo with a lamp post in the way, and after removing it, the sidewalk texture was rebuilt almost perfectly. In my experience, the similar tool in YouCam Perfect leaves a blurry mess more often than not.
- 🚀 One-Tap Cinematic Color Grading: The app offers specific color presets for videos that mimic film looks. You can add a "Blockbuster" or "Vintage Film" grade with one tap, and it applies to the whole timeline without crashing the app. On my old phone, trying to do this in KineMaster would freeze everything, but Genie handles it smoothly.
pros
- ✅ Ultra-Fast Processing: The AI features process in seconds, which is much faster than what I see on apps like Remini. I can enhance an entire photo album in under a minute.
- ✅ No Watermark on Free Version: Unlike many free editors that plaster a logo on your export, Genie lets you save standard quality videos with no watermark. This is a huge win compared to apps like FilmoraGo.
- ✅ Small File Size: The app install is only around 60 MB, which is tiny compared to something like Adobe Premiere Rush. It's perfect for phones with limited storage.
cons
- ❌ Limited Raw Camera Support: If you shoot in RAW format, the app struggles to preview those files properly. For professional-level photographers, Lightroom Mobile is still the better choice for photo handling.
- ❌ Occasional Crash on Old Devices: On my older Samsung phone, the app sometimes crashes when I try to export a long 10-minute video. It works fine on my newer phone, but stability isn't as solid as CapCut for legacy hardware.
- ❌ Export Resolution Cap: The free version only exports video up to 1080p. If you want 4K recording output, you have to pay for the subscription. CapCut offers 4K for free, so this is a clear weakness on Genie's side.
